The impact of sociodemographic and psychosocial factors on Hemoglobin A1c during the COVID-19 pandemic in adults in Denmark with type 1 or 2 diabetes: A cohort study of outpatients at Danish diabetes clinics
Short summary
The WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, 2020. In Denmark nationwide lockdowns resulted in social isolation and disruption. Societal shifts may impact people in need of treatment and care due to a chronic disease harder. The impact of COVID-19 in people with diabetes is still not fully understood. Based on two surveys and clinical data on Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c), we aim to study the relation between the pandemic and 1) well-being and health behavior and 2) trajectories of HbA1c.
Rationale
We do not yet fully understand the impact of the pandemic on psychosocial and behavioral factors and their association with and impact on glycemic levels in people with diabetes. Such insights could help health professionals in tailoring treatment and care according to the individual person's specific needs, so that people with diabetes can sustain the best possible diabetes management during adverse or challenging life events. Therefore, we set up a study to investigate associations between behavioral and psychosocial factors and diabetes management defined by glycemic control. The aim of this study is twofold. First, to describe worries, health behavior and diabetes self-management according to sociodemographic and psychosocial factors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Second, to investigate associations between sociodemographic and psychosocial factors on levels of HbA1c during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study population is adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes treated at a diabetes clinic in the Region of Southern Denmark.
Description of the cohort
The cohort consist of outpatients with diabetes (≥16 years of age) with at least one outpatient contact during the preceding year* in one of the five public hospital in the Region of Southern Denmark; OUH Odense, OUH Svendborg, Sydvestjysk Sygehus, Sygehus Lillebælt and Sygehus Sønderjylland. We define the final analysis sample as patients who answered each of two consecutive questionnaires sent during the spring of 2020 and 2021.
