Quality and research data base for specific bronchial and nasal challenge patients

Short summary

Patients with occupational rhinitis or asthma are challenged with the suspected causative material in our inhalation chamber. Usually the material is a low molecular weight chemical that cannot be tested with skin prick or blood tests. Identifying the specific cause of the disease is necessary for correct treatment as well as preventing further cases at the work place.

Rationale

The inhalation chamber at the Department of Pulmonary Medicine has been functional for 3 years. All challenges are carefully planned by occupational and pulmonary medical experts. Each challenge is unique and reproduces the patient's work function in the chamber. Sessions including placebo exposures are included to rule out nonspecific reactions. Recently developed technology is used to evaluate rhinitis: acoustic rhinometry and nasal NO. Systematic data collection is important for quality control of unique challenges and new diagnostic data. We have already identified new sensitizing agents. It is vital that such observations are systematically collected and published.

Description of the cohort

The cohort includes all rhinitis and asthma patients who have been referred to a specific challenge in our chamber.

Data and biological material

The following data will be registered in: "The quality and research data base for specific bronchial and nasal challenge patients".

Name, birth date, gender, identification number.

Type of work including exposures.

Materials used for the active and control challenge as well as concentration and time of exposure.

The subjective response is registered systematically supplied with repetitive objective measurements.

For asthma it includes FEV1, FVC, peak flow, FeNO, as well as metacholine challenge,

For rhinitis data it includes acoustic rhinometry data, nasal NO, rhinitis questionnaire.
