Rotella, a novel salvage procedure after trapeziectomy

Short summary

Thumb arthrosis is a common disease which results in disabling pain and discomfort in a group of people. That results in discomfort during the retirement and thus low quality of life. Surgical approach is taken into consideration when non-surgical treatment is not adequate. In most of cases the surgeries do relieve the pain and improve the function of the hand. However, a group of them do not experience any relieve from pain, and thus other treatment options had to be developed.

Rationale

Lack of treatment in the above mentioned group resulted in a new surgical treatment, developed by two senior surgeons at the department of orthopedics in Kolding Hospital. It is a procedure where a tendon from the palmaris fascia is relocated to the area in the hand where the two bones collide. The Rotella/Haribo procedure has shown to relieve the pain and improve the function of the hand. Furthermore no specific complications were observed. The aim of the study is to measure the outcome on patients who did not have successfull trapeziectomy procedure and thus were admissioned to have the rotella procedure perfomed.

Description of the cohort

The patients included in our cohort are from among those on whom Rotella/Haribo-surgery was perfomed during the period of 01/01/2010-31/12/2020 in outpatients clinics at the department of Orthopedic surgery, Kolding Hospital.
