Ovarian sex cord-stromal cell tumors and the associated risk of other primary malignancies

Short summary

Ovarian sex cord-stromal cell tumors (SCST) are rare tumors of the ovary, are mostly benign tumors and if malignant 70-80% have remission free survival after surgery. However, previous studies have established an increased risk of other primary malignancies in women with SCST. In this project we aim to calculate the associated risk of other primary malignancies in women with SCST in a comprehensive national cohort and compare with a control-group.

Rationale

Ovarian sex cord-stromal cell tumors (SCST) are rare tumors of the ovary. In Denmark 20-30 women get diagnosed each year. Most tumors are benign and malignant tumors are succesfully treated with complete remission in 70-80% og cases. However, previous studies have suggested an increased risk of developing other primary malignancies. These studies were based on selected samples and compared to age-adjusted risk of cancers. We aim to present a comprehensive national cohort of SCSTs and calculate the risk of associated cancers by comparing the cohort to a control-group.

Description of the cohort

The case-group consists of all women diagnosed with SCSTs in the period 1997-2017. The period was chosen because the National Registry of Pathology was established in 1997. We want to have a 5-year follow up on all women, therefore the end-period was 2017. All diagnosis of SCST were validated. The control-cohort is established by matching the case-group with 10 control corresponding to the year of birth.

Data and biological material

Data for the case-group with gathered from the National Registry of Pathology. The data for the case and control-group was enriched or established from the National Patient Registry, The National Cancer Register, The Register of Pharmaceutical Sales, The Birth Register, The Cause of Death Register and Denmark's Statistics.
