The neuropathology of "dementia epileptica" - Seizure-induced dementia or epilepsy and dementia?

Short summary

Epilepsy and dementia are closely linked to each other, an association that is known since the end of the 19th century and was described as "dementia epileptica". Seizures are a risk factor for developing symptoms of dementia in both chronic focal/structural epilepsy and after newly acquired brain damage. Conversely, dementia is a major risk factor for seizures.

Rationale

This raised the hypothesis that seizures may trigger or promote neurodegeneration, a hypothesis that will be studied in this project using the Danish Brain Bank.

Description of the cohort

Patients with epileptic seizures or "dementia epileptica" from the Danish Brain Bank.

Data and biological material

Various brain regions from fixated brain samples of participants from the Danish Brain Bank
