Physical and psychological workplace violence experienced by prehospital personnel

Short summary

The prehospital personnel are in high risk of physical and/or psychological violence during work. Violence and threats of violence have terrible physical and psychological consequences for the victims. These consequences include personal challenges in their everyday life, use of sick days, reports, and the need for professional help. This study is a retrospective cohort study. It serves to reach the whole prehospital sector in Denmark (approx. 2500 people). The focus is workplace violence and it

Rationale

Workplace violence (WPV) against health care workers (HCW) is a global problem, where 4% of HCW in Europe have experienced physical or verbal WPV. Especially emergency HCW in the prehospital environment seem to experience high levels of WPV; one study found that paramedics have almost thrice the risk of WPV. Due to the increased focus on mental health and workplace environment, WPV is an increasingly important subject to study and closely monitor. There have been published few papers on WPV in the prehospital environment around the world, and no studies which cover Denmark. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine incidents of physical and/or psychological workplace violence against prehospital personnel in Denmark, the demographic of the perpetrators, and the effects these types of violence have on the individual HCW both professionally and privately.

Description of the cohort

The study includes prehospital personnel in all regions of Denmark, including following: - Prehospital doctor - Paramedic - Ambulance care assistant - Ambulance behandler - Patient transport service drivers - Healthcare visitor - Technical dispatcher in call center - Student

Data and biological material

Data will be collected through a survey sent to prehospital personnel in all regions of Denmark. The survey is made using REDCap and the data will be analyzed using STATA.
