The Liver Cohort

Short summary

Patients with liver cirrhosis are frequently hospitalized in an advanced stage due to ascites, bleeding, infections and other complications seen in advanced liver disease. Currently the readmission rate due to liver related complication after discharge from the hospital is very high. There is an unmet need explore this, as an evolving body of evidence suggest, that identifying and addressing risk factor for disease progression and readmission in cirrhosis, is cost effective and reduce morbidity and mortality.

Rationale

The aim of this cohort is to identify risk factors for death, disease progression and re-admission among discharged cirrhotic patients. We hypothesize that we can identify such risk factors by better use on medical history, clinical examination and laboratory testing already available at the time of discharge from the hospital.

Description of the cohort

We will establish a large prospective cohort of patients discharged with liver disease from 2016 and on from Odense University Hospital. We expect to enroll between 25-50 patients a year in the database and patients will be followed until death.

Patient will be recruited from the Department of Medical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Odense University Hospital. Other department taking care of cirrhotic patients will be invited to participate.

Data and biological material

In connection to this study, a biobank for future research will be established to contribute to future research on improving diagnosis and the treatment of liver cirrhosis.
