Thumb Arthroplasty Register Study

Short summary

We investigate results after total joints arthroplasty of the thumb basal joint.

The traditional surgical procedure to relieve pain from advanved arthritis of the basal joint of the thumb is trapeziektomy in combination with of a number of various suspension/interposition arthroplasties. Reliable and positive results with this treatment can be expected in the elderly, but is unpredictable and often dissapointing in younger patients. A predictable solution for young and high demand patients is needed.

Rationale

Total joint replacement of the basal joint of the thumb is still a controversial procedure with historically unpredictable results, the main cause of failure being loosening of the proximal component. Recently new designs show more promising results. We investigate the effects on pain, satisfaction and pinch grip strenth over a period of at least 10 years of the the MAÏA Prosthesis (Groupe Lépine).

Description of the cohort

The cohort is primarily patients under the age of 60, but active patients with good bone quality on no other contraindications may be included. Patients must have arthritis of the trapeziometacarpal joint of the 1st digit visible on x-rays and conservative measures must have failed. Patients with thumb basal joint arthritis are predominantly postmenopausal women.

Data and biological material

The following data is collected: CPR-number, grip-strenth, pain assessment, prostesis type/sizes, X-rays of the hand, range of motion, patient reported questionnaires.
