Virtual consultations in diabetes care: A user-centred approach for design and development Phase 3 Patient reported outcome on diabetes and communication

Short summary

This study investigate patient reported outcome on diabetes and communication iwhen using video consultations. In an observational cohort study ee hypothesize that the use of video consultations will:

1. Improve patient reported outcome

2. result in non-inferior patient-health professional (nurse, dietitian and clinician) communication (

3. lead to better economic outcome

Rationale

In 2017, the two first phases of the current study was carried out at the Diabetes outpatient clinic at the Department of Endocrinology, OUH. The aim was to identify needs among patients with diabetes in order to carry out diabetes treatment and care at the out-patient clinic and at home, and to develop the technology in order to provide support and empower patients, and thereby increase the individual patient's self-care in handling daily life with chronic illness. Twenty patients tested the technology. There was a high level of satisfaction among both patients and clinicians. During the test some technical problems occurred, and these were addressed and solved. Despite a positive response among the nurses to video consultations, implementation was still challenged. A number of barriers were found e.g. opposition to changes as nursing has to be provide in a different way, uncertainty toward the technology, quality in care and the relation between nurse, patient and relatives. Barriers toward new workflows, changed tasks and resources were revealed as well. These aspects were investigated by individual interviews, focus groups and field studies (paper in preparation).
