Training thoracic ultrasound skills: a multicentre, blinded, randomized controlled trial of simulation-based training versus training on healthy figurants

Short summary

The aim of the project is to explore the effect of simulation-based training versus hands-on training on healthy figurants for thoracic ultrasound. 


Rationale

The technical development has made ultrasound increasing accessible and feasible. Bedside ultrasound examinations are made daily by clinicians within all specialities, and are today incorporated as a high accuracy diagnostic tool and essential part of patient examination. However, this widespread implementation has led to an increased demand of structured educational programs and courses.

Thoracic ultrasound examinations are considered safe, without exposure to radiation or delay of patients' course, but ultrasound in general is highly operator dependent [4], and lack of sufficient theoretical knowledge or practical skills can lead to incorrect diagnosis and thus treatment. Simulation-based medical education in a structured program has been suggested to accelerate the learning curve in the early stage of ultrasound training in several different ultrasound examinations. 

The objective of this randomized controlled trial is to examine whether simulation-based training on a simulator is superior to training thoracic ultrasound on healthy figurants. 



Description of the cohort

The included participants in this trial are phycisians with no prior education or experience in thoracic ultrasound.

- Questionnaires on participant demographics and previous experience with ultrasound

- Clinical assessment/test scores
