To Learn and to practice basic stimulation in intensive care nursing

Short summary

Basic stimulation is a specific way of creating contact and to care for persons, who have a brain dysfunction. In one intensive care unit the nurses were trained and supervised by a basic stimulation instructor to pracitce basic stimulation in intensive care nursing.

The qualitative interview study with nine nurses aimed to explore nurses experiences in relation to learn and to practice basic stimulation in intensive care.

The study can contribute with knowledge about the importance of exercising basic stimulation by nurses in the care of critical ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit.

Rationale

Basic stimulation is a way to connect with patients focusing on creating contact and involving the patient in a mutual dialogue. Basic stimulation works with different tecniques and approaches to enhance patient autonomy, independence and involvement. Basic stimulation is currently mostly applied in care to patients with brain damage, dementia or neurological deficits. Basic stimulation has been implemented in one intensive care unit at Odense University hospital. Therefore, we wanted to explore intensive care nurses experiences in relation to learn and to practice basic stimulation in intensive care.
