Identification of patients at risk for cerebral damage after status epilepticus

Short summary

Cerebral damage resulting in severe neurological deficits are a possible outcome after status epilepticus. Early identification of patients at risk for neurological damage is required for optimal stratification of treatment intensity. This project aims at identifing the optimal modality for identification of patients at risk for neurological deficits due to status epilepticus.

Rationale

The long-mortality of status epilepticus is high and associated with the clinical and neurological status at discharge. It is likely that aggressive treatment may prevent neurological damage, however, this therapy is associated with substantial morbidity and life-threatening complications. To identify patients with risk of neurological damage is crucial for future, risk-adapted therapy.

Description of the cohort

All adult patients with verified status epilepticus treated in the Region of Southern Denmark.

Data and biological material

Blood and cerebrospinal fluid.
