Metabolic risk in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Short summary

PCOS is defined by irregular menses, hyperandrogenimia and polycystic ovaries. PCOS is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. 

Women are screened metabolically by time of PCOS diagnosis, whereas guidelines differ regarding screening for metabolic risk during follup up. 

The present study will include 200 women with PCOS. The women are evaluated by study inclusion and after 5, 10, 15, and 20 years.   


Rationale

PCOS is defined by irregular menses, hyperandrogenimia and polycystic ovaries. PCOS is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. 

Women are screened metabolically by time of PCOS diagnosis, whereas guidelines differ regarding screening for metabolic risk during follup up. Risk of cardiometabolic disease could be predicted by baseline phenotype.   


The aim of the present study is to follow 200 women with PCOS prospectively regarding cardiometabolic risk factors.
